In a real-world casino, Blackjack is unique among other games of chance in that a skilled blackjack player can employ strategies to keep their odds very close to those of the house.

It is the game with the best odds of coming out ahead. There is a basic strategy to Blackjack that should be memorized and followed in order to give a player the best shot at winning. Players can increase their odds even more by using techniques such as card-counting to keep track of the high and low cards in a deck or shoe. However, counting cards is not as useful of a strategy when it comes to online blackjack. In a real-world casino, there are real-world security professionals always on hand nearby to make sure that players don’t use computerized methods to cheat the house. While counting cards in and of itself isn’t technically considered cheating, using a computer to help you do it certainly is.

How then do online casinos prevent a player from using computerized methods of counting their cards?

In order to be fair and legal, an online casino has to replicate a real-world deck of cards and use the same odds that a brick and mortar casino would use. This would mean that the same card counting techniques used on the strip in Las Vegas would work just as well online, and since there is no “all-seeing eye” to prevent a player from cheating, the online casinos could be at a disadvantage.

Online casinos counter this by changing the way they shuffle their virtual decks. Instead of going through an entire deck or an entire shoe before shuffling, like a real-world casino would, the online casino shuffles its deck after every round. In a real casino, this would be prohibitively time-consuming, but in an online casino it takes no time at all. It doesn’t unfairly change the odds of the game, but it does render card-counting techniques (both machine-assisted and in-your-head) useless.

Therefore when you’re playing blackjack on-line, it’s best to stick with the standard strategy tables of when to hit, when to stay, and when to split and double. You’ll still have the best odds out of any other game, but you won’t have the added advantage that counting cards might get you in a physical casino.
